| Do parents stay for the class? Yes, a parent or caregiver needs to be present with their child/children during classes. It is important that parents have an understanding on what is going on in the classes so they can work with their children at home.
What would you recommend on frequency? Twice a week would be ideal. Research shows that your child should be exposed to a minimum of 90 minutes of the target language per week. However, latest research from the University of Washington conducted by neuro scientist Dr. Patricia Kuhl argues that even 12 hours with a native speaker will result in sound recognition of a foreign language. This potentially means that babies have the ability to capture the authentic sound system of any language in a very short time. Please know: No exposure is ever lost!!!!
How will I practice with my child at home? You will receive a Parent Handbook and a collection of songs to download. The Parent Handbook includes a short insight into how young children learn a second language as well as specific exercises and recommendations for before and after class practise. In addition, the Parent Handbook offers a pronunciation and a basic vocabulary guide to help parents comprehend more even if they do not speak the language. Parents also receive a collection of 10 songs (downloaded) specifically designed and recorded to accompany Bilingual Tots' full immersion language classes.
What about class size? We keep our classes small. We accept a maximum of 6-7 children per class. The reason for small class sizes is the fact that young learners respond to the person/teacher and they will struggle to communicate regardless of the language that the teacher uses. A small class size allows the teacher to develop a personal relationship with each student which greatly helps the learning process.
Do you offer make-up classes in case my child is sick and we are not able to come to class? Absolutely. We are very flexible on this issue and will work with you. As a matter of fact, we would like to ask everybody to help us keep our staff and students healthy by keeping sick children at home!
How do we register? You can register on-line. You can also send a check to Bilingual Tots if you wish. There is no registration fee, only tuition which includes all materials. Siblings enjoy a 30% discount in the same class. We allow late registration if the class is not full, but only during the first 2 weeks of instruction. Remember, our class sizes are very small so you need to insure a spot early for your child.
What if I want my child to study a language that you are not offering at this point?
Let us know what language you would be interested in and we will identify a native teacher. We can start a language course with 2-3 children.
Can I observe a class?
One observation session is encouraged. Observation is not free at this point. Observation with your child is $25. We want you to participate with your child. Experience the class instead of just "observing". This will help you determine whether it is a good fit or not.
Is this drop-in or do I pay for the whole course?
It is important to understand that this is a serious commitment. By coming to class consistently you are establishing a routine, you are teaching your child a valuable lesson about sticking with something you start, and you are teaching her/him about the process of learning in a classroom environment. Therefore, parents pay for the 10 or 12-week course in advance. If you have to miss a class for any reason, I will work with you as much as possible so you do not lose your money entirely.
