Here are some of the benefits of learning a second language:
- It will be easier and faster to learn any language if your brain is already wired to be open to a second language.
- Even if you do not learn to speak a second language fluently at an early age, you can pick it up later and can still learn it at a native speaker or near native speaker level after you have been exposed to the sound system of the language at an early age.
- Studying a foreign language is excellent for the developing brain. It has been proven that children that study a second language do better on math, vocabulary and social study tests.
- If you make another language and culture a vital part of your child’s life, you are helping them become more tolerant and more understanding. You are bringing up global citizens, therefore giving your child a chance to travel and maybe even live abroad.
- Foreign language learning improves your listening skills, improves your memory, and is believed to make you more creative.
- Knowing another language, understanding another culture builds self-esteem.
- In 2004 the University College of London conducted a study and examined the brains of over a hundred people who learned a second language starting from a very young age. They found that these people had a denser grey matter than those who learned a language later.
- Exposure to a second language increases the ability to look at problems in many different ways. It makes you understand that there is more than one way to evaluate something, and there is also more than one solution.
